May 13, 1980: The Orange Bowl was used to provide temporary shelter for thousands of Cuban refugees during the Mariel Boatlift. In addition to those housed inside the stadium, a tent city was set up to accommodate hundreds more in the stadium's southwest parking lot. The refugees would be removed by August of 1980 in time for the Miami Dolphins preseason. Miami City Manager Cesar Odio is interviewed in the report. In 1980, the Orange Bowl was used as temporary shelter for Cuban refugees who came over from the Mariel Boatlift. Refugees received food, clothing, medical care and shelter during their stay at the Orange Bowl. The exodus started to have negative political implications for U.S. president Jimmy Carter when it was discovered that a number of the refugees had been released from Cuban jails and mental health facilities. The Mariel boatlift was ended by mutual agreement between the two governments in
