The two-day proceeding in L.A. ended on its first day with the judge resentencing the brothers who have spent more than three decades behind bars for their parents' 1989 murders.

Erik and Lyle Menendez were resentenced yesterday, making them eligible for parole. This comes after they’ve served 35 years in prison for killing their parents.

At Tuesday's long-awaited resentencing hearing, which included testimony from family members supporting their bid for freedom, Lyle and Erik Menendez made a virtual appearance from the San Diego prison where they are being held.

Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael Jesic reduced the brothers’ sentences from life without parole to 50 years to life. They’re now eligible for parole under California’s youthful offender law because they committed the crime under the age of 26. The state parole board must still decide whether to release them from prison.

Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted for the 1989 shotgun murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, after arguing that they acted in self-defense.
