The storm is traveling westward to the north of the Northern Leeward Islands, where it will have some impacts as it brushes the northeast Caribbean through the weekend.

Hurricane Erin is rapidly intensifying as it tracks above the northeastern Caribbean Saturday, churning up rough surf and sending rain and gusty winds to islands south of its path.

The Hurricane Center warned that heavy rain in some areas could trigger flash flooding, landslides and mudslides.
