Portions of Pennsylvania and New York are under a lake-effect snow warning on Tuesday as heavy accumulations are possible.
Winds out of the north-northwest will bring persistent snow bands to the immediate lakeshore this evening with a widespread 1-3" of snow expected along US-31 by tomorrow morning. Winds shift to become northwesterly Sunday which will allow for lake-effect snow to spread further inland, though most snowfall will stay west of US-131.
The steady lake-effect snow that was overspreading a big section of the state will continue across some areas into Wednesday morning. There will also be heavier bursts of snow creating more low-visibility issues that caused accidents and highway shutdowns earlier today.
Paired with the Arctic air comes robust lake-effect snow beginning on Sunday. While the snow will initially target lakeshore counties, wind will eventually blow snow much further inland. Cold will be intense enough to make salt much less effective on the roads.
Winter weather advisories or winter storm warnings are in place for nine states across the U.S. as of early Tuesday morning, and up to nine inches of snow is forecast by the National Weather Service (NWS) in some parts of the country.
