Several Australian airlines have canceled flights to and from the popular Indonesian vacation island of Bali after an erupting volcano gushed a column of hot ash miles into the sky.

Several Australian airlines on Wednesday cancelled their flights to and from the Indonesian resort island of Bali, after a nearby volcano catapulted an ash tower miles into the sky. Australian tourists make up one of the biggest groups of tourists that visit the resort island every year.

Three Australian airlines have cancelled flights to and from Bali after a volcanic eruption in nearby Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki created a dangerous 9km ash cloud. Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Australia flights scheduled for Nov 12 and Nov 13 have been grounded, leaving affected travellers stranded, reported British newspaper The Guardian.

In 2016, a similar volcanic event on Lombok resulted in prolonged flight cancellations, affecting thousands of passengers for days.
