Rates of measles in the US have climbed significantly over the past 20 years, as vaccine skepticism has grown.

Public health experts said that although it’s true we have measles cases in the U.S. every year, the latest outbreak is concerning.

Recently appointed Health Secretary RFK, Jr. appeared to dismiss a rare measles outbreak in Texas, saying it’s “not unusual.”

At least 124 cases have been reported since late January, mostly among children and teenagers who were unvaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown.

A child who was not vaccinated has died from measles in West Texas. It's the first death in an outbreak that began late last month and the first from measles in the U.S. since 2015.
