Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions have had to revamp their coaching staff early this offseason. The Lions lost both coordinators to head coaching jobs, with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson taking over the Chicago Bears and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn leaving for the New York Jets.

Shaw and Morton go back to their days as offensive coaches for the Raiders under Jon Gruden in the late 90’s. They followed similar paths from there.
Campbell hired Morton as a senior offensive assistant that season. It just so happened to be Johnson’s first year as an offensive coordinator and play caller. He was only 35 at the time. Considering Campbell had fired Anthony Lynn just one year into his Detroit tenure, it was crucial for him to get the next hire right.
