The Dallas Mavericks won the lottery. Entering the day with a 1.8% chance of landing the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, they overcame the odds and earned the right to pick Duke star Cooper Flagg next month, beating out more favored teams like the Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets.

Late last month, the Dallas Mavericks and Chicago Bulls squared off in a seemingly inconsequential coin-flip, with little attention paid to a small tiebreaking matter between two teams that didn’t even reach the first round of the NBA playoffs.

Not only did the Jazz drop to No. 5 in the draft order, the Dallas Mavericks landed the No. 1 pick (after having only a 1.8% chance to do so), the San Antonio Spurs snagged the No. 2 pick, the Philadelphia 76ers nabbed the No. 3 pick and the Charlotte Hornets got the No. 4 pick.

We’re less than 24 hours away from the most important draft lottery in Utah Jazz history. That’s not hyperbolic; the Jazz have never tanked like they have this season, the lack of talent on the roster has never been more glaring.
