McIlroy, who won the 2019 and 2022 RBC Canadian Opens, did not have it this week. After opening with a 71, he shot 78 on Friday, his card showing a quad 8 on the par-4 fifth hole. He managed to only beat four guys this week.
McIlroy turned in 5-over 40 and then started his back nine in bogey-double-par-bogey. In danger of shooting in the 80s, he played his final four holes in 1 under. The 78 was McIlroy’s worst score since shooting the same number in the first round of last year’s Open Championship.
There are 29 golfers tied for 18th or better after 36 holes in Toronto who are not in the U.S. Open field. A win would get them in.
