Steve Yzerman got rid of the Detroit Red Wings' biggest underachiever last season, clearing cap space and a roster spot. The Red Wings agreed to a trade on Monday, June 30 to send Vladimir Tarasenko to the Minnesota Wild.

Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman explored making a trade around the NHL draft, which takes place this weekend, June 27-28. The Wings entered the event holding their first pick at No. 13 – and exited the first round having held onto it and choosing forward Carter Bear.

So, Yzerman used his top pick to select left wing Carter Bear, a goal-scorer with a high complete level. As with most draft picks, it’ll be a few years before he reaches the NHL, but Bear fills an organizational need.
