Severe thunderstorms are expected to pass through Michigan on Thursday evening, a tornado watch has been issued for parts of Michigan

A tornado watch is in effect for the Lansing area and more than three dozen counties across Lower Michigan as a storm front is poised to move across the Lower Peninsula from Lake Michigan. The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids issued the watch shortly after 8 p.

Eleven states have seen double or more tornado reports through May this year than the same time period last year.

Higher winds and slightly cooler temperatures will be ushered in for Thursday. Peak gusts will be up around 40-50 mph in Nebraska by the afternoon.

The Storm Prediction Center has maintained an enhanced risk for severe weather on the day for much of West Michigan, stretching as far east as Ann Arbor and as far north as Manistee. The rest of the region is under a slight risk for severe storms.

Even prior to that issuance, the NWS issued a Special Weather Statement at 8:34 pm that, “A significant and long-track tornado was likely in the area.” This was all based on the WoFS output. According to NOAA, forecasters spoke highly of the coordinated guidance provided by the NSSL scientists as the event unfolded.

By Tuesday, a heavy rain and thunderstorm pattern will sweep across eastern Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana. Intense winds, hail, isolated tornadoes and flash flooding are possible Tuesday and Tuesday night, AccuWeather said.
