The Associated Press was informed by the White House it would be barred unless it aligned its editorial standards with the U.S. president's order on renaming the body of water.

The wire service said the decision stemmed from a style guidance to continue using the name Gulf of Mexico instead of Gulf of America.

The White House banned an Associated Press reporter from attending an executive-order signing in the Oval Office on Tuesday — in protest of the outlet’s style guidance on the Gulf of America, the news agency said.

The Associated Press has said it would refer to the Gulf of Mexico “by its original name while acknowledging” President Trump’s choice to rename the body of water.

The Associated Press on Tuesday said the White House barred its reporter from an event at the Oval Office because the news agency would not start using "Gulf of America" to describe the Gulf of Mexico.
