Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1, taking his El Clasico tally to eight in seven games and surpassing Lionel Messi’s early record.

The Ballon d’Or winners will be announced today, with a new generation of football stars led by Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé ready to stake their claim to a trophy that, for so long, was defined by the personal rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Lionel Messi holds the record for most Ballon d'Or trophies won. The award goes to the best soccer player of the year.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been football’s two highest earners for four straight seasons, and in 12 of the last 13 years.
