Sunday began with Scott McLaughlin dreaming of his first win in the Indianapolis 500. That dream will have to wait at least another year. McLaughlin was set to start tenth in the Indianapolis 500, but a crash on the pace lap ended his day before it even began.
Josef Newgarden, who entered the 2024 Indy 500 as defending champion, passed O'Ward on turn three in the final lap, securing back-to-back Indy 500 victories. Newgarden became the first driver since Hélio Castroneves in 2001 and 2002 to win the race in back-to-back years.
