The UK minister for homelessness, Rushanara Ali, has resigned from her role after she told tenants in a house she owns that they had to leave and then raised the rent sharply. Ali had faced calls to quit her government job after it emerged the Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Stepney had given tenants four months’ notice to leave her house in east London and shortly after they left raised the rent by £700 a month.

Rushanara Ali has resigned as homelessness minister, Downing Street has confirmed. The move comes after she was accused of hypocrisy over the way she handled rent increases on a house she owns in east London.
