Flossie has strengthened into a hurricane off Mexico’s southwestern Pacific coast. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Flossie became a Category 1 hurricane Monday night and has maximum sustained winds of 130 kph (80 mph).

A sixth named storm has formed just six weeks into the eastern Pacific hurricane season. Tropical Storm Flossie materialized over the weekend about 400 miles west of Nicaragua, and could skim along Mexico’s west coast before bringing wet weather to the Baja Peninsula late in the week.

Tropical Storm Flossie is expected to continue to strengthen in the Pacific Ocean, the National Hurricane Center said.
