If Toronto Maple Leafs fans were holding on to any sort of hope that star forward Mitch Marner would have a change of heart and re-sign rather than hit free agency, those ambitions were likely all but dashed on Saturday.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Las Vegas Golden Knights are engaged in "ongoing" discussions regarding a Mitch Marner sign-and-trade, according to TSN's Darren Dreger.

If he signs with the Maple Leafs, he can get eight years. So in the sign-and-trade, Marner can get that eighth year on his deal (and Vegas can keep him for that extra year, as well). To get it done, the Knights would essentially have to line up what they'd be willing to return to the Maple Leafs for Marner.
