A fatal case of brain-eating amoeba has been reported in South Carolina, with health officials advising swimmers to take precautions in warm freshwater.

A patient at Prisma Health Children's Hospital Midlands in South Carolina died after being infected with Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba, Dr. Anna Kathryn Burch, a pediatric infectious disease specialist, said during a press conference on July 22.

Jaysen Carr’s visitation and funeral will take place Friday and Saturday in Columbia. His death has been linked to a rare amoeba that may have come from Lake Murray.
